BPC: Renal artery stenosis: from the AT1Receptor to the angio suite:  Basic research to clinical research (CORAL) to clinical approaches.

Management of renal artery stenosis is one of the most vexing areas in medicine. While renal artery stenting is effective in reducing the anatomical lesion, evidence of long term renal and cardiovascular benefit is lacking. The result is heterogenous treatment patterns, ranging from aggressive stenting to optimal medical management alone. The only way to determine if renal artery stenting is superior to optimal medical therapy alone is with a controlled clinical trial.

The CORAL study (Cardiovascular Outcomes in Renal Atherosclerotic Lesions) is an NIH study that will hopefully shed light on this management dilemma. Recruitment is now world wide and Canada is playing a major role. This session will review the basics of renovascular disease as well as its clinical epidemiology and current diagnosis and management. The rational for the CORAL study will be reviewed by Dr Chris Cooper from the University of Toledo Medical Center an Interventional Cardiologist and Primary Investigator of the CORAL study, who will discuss it's potential to alter our current clinical practice recommendations for managing renovascular hypertension.
