Controversies in Coronary Interventions:  Annual Interventional Workshop

Chair: Mouhieddin Traboulsi

Description
Case presentations, short debates, and an interactive Q&A session will focus on the real Canadian world of coronary intervention – the successes and the difficulties.  As this symposium uses case history and case presentations to highlight different approaches in interventional cardiology, it is envisioned that participants will gain a clear understanding and appreciation for different perspectives in dealing with complexity in daily interventional cardiology cases... that there is no single approach rather that there is an armamentarium at the disposal of the practicing cardiologist to be used to improve patient outcomes.

Objectives:

  • Review the latest developments in coronary interventions – new practices, new techniques and new technology
  • Understanding the importance of optimal medical therapy in revascularization decision-making
  • Evaluating the role of PCI in AMI management
  • DES vs. BMS –in search of the optimum balance

The CV Show: Expert Insights into Atherosclerotic Vulnerability in the Vulnerable Patient

Breakfast will be served at 06:30.

Chair: Jacques Genest

Screening for early-stage asymptomatic cancers (e.g. breast or colon cancer) to prevent late-stage malignancies has been widely accepted. However, although atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (e.g. heart attack and stroke) accounts for more death and disability than all cancers combined, there are no national screening guidelines for asymptomatic (sub-clinical) atherosclerosis, and there is no government or healthcare-sponsored reimbursement for atherosclerosis screening.
The objective of this discussion is to review, discuss and recognize the evidence and new discoveries in the field of atherosclerosis, which have led to the concept of “vulnerable plaque to vulnerable patient.”

This landmark evidence, along with new diagnostic and therapeutic options, has set the stage for the next step: translation of this knowledge into a new practice of preventive cardiology.

Agenda

The Biological Basis of Atherosclerotic Vulnerability

How Early to Treat? Maximizing the Benefits of Statin Therapy

Surrogate Endpoints as a Compliment to Clinical Outcomes OR Non Invasive Imaging

New Concepts in Acute Coronary Syndromes: Beyond 2000 (XIV)

Chair: Paul W Armstrong

This program will explore key contemporary concepts and the current and emerging knowledge base associated with all aspects of the ST elevation and non-ST-elevation acute coronary syndromes (ACS). Contemporary data addressing the impact of timely reperfusion and its impact on therapeutic choices will be provided. Evaluation of the relevant benefits of antithrombotic versus antiplatelet therapy as adjuncts to pharmacologic reperfusion will be developed in a debate format. So too will the relative merits of non-invasive versus invasive study following pharmacologic reperfusion for STEMI. Revisitation of the role of secondary prevention and rehabilitation after ACS will be undertaken. Finally, a preview of key clinical trials relevant to the ACS arena will be discussed as it relates to how their design and potential results will impact on clinical practice.

Participants in this program will:

  • Appreciate the opportunities of a systems approach to enhance outcomes in ST elevation myocardial infarction.
  • Comprehend the basis for prudent reperfusion choices in a Canadian context.
  • Appreciate the relative merits of antithrombotic versus antiplatelet therapy as adjuncts to reperfusion therapy.
  • Understand the role of non-invasive versus invasive testing following reperfusion therapy and the key role of secondary prevention and rehabilitation post ACS.
  • Preview the clinical trials in progress that will impact on clinical practice in the context of ACS.

Expert Opinions: Current Issues in Cardiology

Breakfast will be served at 06:30.

Chair: Jean Rouleau

The 5th annual Current Issues in Cardiology satellite symposium will expose Canadian clinicians to issues that go beyond clinical practice.  This symposium will highlight translational research and provide a unique “bench-to-bedside” perspective on some of the most remarkable research that is taking place in Canada and abroad in cardiology and related fields.

Scientists are increasingly aware that this bench-to-bedside approach to translational research is really a two-way street. Basic scientists provide clinicians with new tools for use in patients and for assessment of their impact, and clinical researchers make novel observations about the nature and progression of disease that often stimulate basic investigations.  This satellite symposium will provide a forum in which leading Canadian and international researchers and clinicians will be able to expand upon some of the groundbreaking research that will influence the next generation of cardiac care.

Translational Feature Lecture - Is there a Genetic Link between Breast Cancer and Heart Disease?

Anti-Platelet Therapy - What are the Recent Advances that will Improve Outcomes for ACS Patients?

Oncology - The cardiotoxicity of older drugs is a growing concern for cardiologists.  What does recent research show us about the newest generation of oncology drugs?

Dyslipidemia - Will an understanding of the reciprocal relationship between cholesterol absorption and synthesis allow for the development of more effective interventions for dyslipdemic patients?
